Türkiye’s para swimmers delivered an outstanding performance at the World Para Swimming Championships in Singapore, securing one gold, one silver and two bronze medals.

According to the Turkish Swimming Federation, Defne Kurt claimed the gold medal in the women’s SM10 200 meters individual medley, clocking a time of 2:28.30.

Sevilay Ozturk added a silver medal in the women’s S5 50m backstroke, finishing with a time of 43.75.

Meanwhile, two bronze medals came from Sümeyye Boyacı, who swam the S5 50m backstroke in 44.87, and Turgut Aslan Yaraman, who posted 1:06.52 in the men’s S8 100m backstroke.

The championship in Singapore will conclude on Saturday.

Türkiye’s rise in Paralympic swimming

Türkiye’s progress in Paralympic swimming has gained remarkable momentum in recent years, both in terms of athletic achievements and raising social awareness. Strong performances at the 2016 Rio and 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games fueled public interest and accelerated investment in the sport’s infrastructure.

Special training camps, technical support, and international collaborations led by the Turkish Swimming Federation have helped young athletes reach a level where they can compete globally.

The results in Singapore are proof of this progress. Defne Kurt’s gold in the SM10 200m individual medley marks the first time Türkiye has reached the top of the podium in this event. Sevilay Ozturk and Sumeyye Boyaci have already established themselves as icons of Paralympic swimming with consistent success at previous championships, while Turgut Aslan Yaraman’s bronze underlines the growing potential on the men’s side.
