UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Fenerbahce, Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood over the post-match incidents after the Turkish club’s Champions League playoff second leg against Lyon.
Fenerbahce confirmed the probe in a statement on Thursday, stating that it will submit the necessary information, documents and defenses to UEFA and protect the rights and interests of its players and the club before the relevant disciplinary bodies.
The confrontation followed Fenerbahce’s 2-1 victory in Lyon, which secured the Turkish side a place in the Champions League league phase. The match itself passed without major disruption in the stands, but tensions rose after the final whistle.
Guendouzi and Greenwood, both former Marseille players, faced hostility from the Lyon crowd during the match.
The situation escalated when Lyon players and staff confronted Guendouzi as he was being escorted from the field. A separate confrontation then broke out in the tunnel, with Lyon goalkeeper coach Antonio Ferreira also reported to have confronted the Fenerbahce midfielder.
Guendouzi later said Lyon fans had targeted him and his family with insults throughout the match, including during the warmup, and maintained that he had every right to celebrate after helping his team secure a crucial victory.
Fenerbahce’s victory in Lyon completed its successful qualifying campaign and sent the Turkish club into the Champions League league phase. The team drew 1-1 with Lyon in the first leg in Istanbul before winning 2-1 in France to advance 3-2 on aggregate.
The club now faces a demanding eight-game league-phase schedule, beginning at home against Roma on Sept. 10.
Fenerbahce then travels to Aston Villa before hosting Slavia Prague and Liverpool, with further away games against Shakhtar Donetsk and LASK and meetings with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid rounding out the campaign.
Fenerbahce’s opening fixture against Roma is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. CET on Sept. 10, as the Turkish side turns its attention to the league phase following the controversy surrounding the Lyon match.
