The World Armwrestling Federation (WAF) has removed all limitations on the participation of Russian athletes, teams, and officials, Russia's sports minister said Friday.
Writing on the Russian social media company Max, Mikhail Degtyarev said the decision was made ahead of the World Armwrestling Championships, scheduled to take place from Oct. 26 to Nov. 7, 2026, in New Delhi, India.
The event, officially known as the 47th World Armwrestling Championship and 28th World Para Armwrestling Championship, will be hosted by the People's Armwrestling Federation of India (PAFI) at the Leela Ambience Convention Hotel.
According to the World Armwrestling Federation, the championships are expected to draw more than 1,700 athletes, officials, and supporters from over 60 countries, making it one of the largest international armwrestling events ever organized.
Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under their national flag and anthem, while their results will count toward the overall team standings, he added.
The minister said the move followed the International Olympic Committee's July 7 decision to provisionally lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), describing it as a sign of the international sports community's commitment to the full return of Russian athletes.
The IOC provisionally lifted the ROC's suspension on July 7, saying its Executive Board had determined that the committee no longer included regional sports organizations in territories under the jurisdiction of Ukraine's National Olympic Committee.
Ukraine said Wednesday that it had filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport challenging the IOC's decision to provisionally lift the ROC's suspension.
