Konya Velodrome, considered one of the most modern cycling tracks in both Türkiye and Europe, will host high-profile world record attempts on August 14 and 15. The event is being organized by the Turkish Cycling Federation in collaboration with the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and British Cycling.
Three internationally renowned riders will compete in the Olympic and Paralympic track cycling disciplines. Australian-born sprinter Matthew Richardson, now representing the United Kingdom, aims to break the 200-meter sprint world record. Richardson secured silver medals in Keirin and Sprint at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
British cyclist Charlie Tanfield, a 2018 World Track Champion in Team Pursuit and silver medallist in Individual Pursuit, will attempt to set a new world record in the one-hour time trial. Tanfield also earned bronze in Team Pursuit at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Paralympian William Bjergfelt, competing in the C5 classification for athletes with physical impairments, will target the one-hour world record in his category. Bjergfelt has achieved notable results at the 2021 UCI Para-cycling World Championships and raced at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
On both days, the program will begin with Bjergfelt’s C5 one-hour record attempt in the morning, followed by Tanfield’s standard one-hour record bid late morning, and conclude with Richardson’s 200-meter sprint trial in the afternoon.
