Türkiye’s national tennis player Zeynep Sonmez moved into the second round of the Italian Open in Rome after defeating home player Jennifer Ruggeri 2-1 in the first round.
The tournament, officially part of the Women’s Tennis Association’s WTA 1000 category, is being played on clay courts at the Foro Italico complex in the Italian capital.
WTA 1000 events are among the highest-level tournaments on the women’s tennis calendar outside the Grand Slams.
Sonmez, ranked 65th in the world, was competing in the main draw of the Italian Open for the first time. She faced Ruggeri, ranked 265th, in an opening-round match that lasted 2 hours and 7 minutes.
The Turkish player made a slow start and dropped the first set 6-4, but she soon settled into the match. In the second set, Sonmez broke Ruggeri’s serve three times and took it 6-2 to level the contest.
Sonmez kept up her momentum in the deciding set and did not let control slip away. She won the final set 6-2, completing a comeback victory and booking her place in the next round.
