Turkish national tennis player Zeynep Sonmez has been eliminated from the Madrid Open after losing to Argentina’s Solana Sierra in the round of 32, despite a dominant start to the match.
Sonmez came out sharply and quickly took control, closing the first set 6-0 in a commanding performance that suggested a comfortable path forward. However, the match began to turn as unforced errors started to creep into her game, allowing Sierra to regain footing and shift the psychological balance.
As the contest wore on, Sierra built on that momentum and pushed through the second set 6-2, before maintaining control in the deciding set, which she won 6-3 to complete a 2-1 comeback victory.
At the time of the match, Sonmez held the higher position in the world rankings at No. 67, while Sierra stood at No. 88. Despite that gap, the Argentine player managed to turn the match around after the opening set, closing out the contest with consistent play.
With this result, Sonmez exits the Madrid Open at the round of 32 stage.
