Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez and her German partner Tatjana Maria were eliminated in the third round of the women's doubles event at the U.S. Open, the season's final Grand Slam tournament.
Sonmez, who was eliminated in the first round of the singles competition at the New York tournament, faced American pair Robin Montgomery and Ashlyn Krueger in the doubles third round.
Sonmez and Maria lost the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, and were eliminated from the tournament.
The third-round finish marks the best Grand Slam doubles result of Sonmez's career. Her career doubles ranking peaked at No. 187 in June 2026, and she holds a career doubles record of 17 wins and 38 losses on tour.
Sonmez reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 48 in July 2026, making her the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history. She is the second Turkish woman to break into the WTA top 100, following Cagla Buyukakcay.
Maria, 39, has won four singles titles and four doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2022 and recorded a career-high singles ranking of No. 36 in July 2025, at 37 years and 11 months old.
Maria is a mother of two and has returned to the tour after both pregnancies, a comeback that has become part of her public profile. This is her second time reaching the U.S. Open doubles third round, after doing so in 2023.
