An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the magnitude scale hit near Sochi, a major resort city on Russia’s Black Sea coast, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), an international body that monitors seismic activity across Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
The EMSC reported that the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 21 kilometers southwest of Sochi. The tremor occurred at a depth of 35 kilometers below the surface, a factor that can influence how strongly shaking is felt at ground level.
Sochi, known internationally for hosting the 2014 Winter Olympics, lies in a seismically active region near the Caucasus mountain range, where tectonic movements occasionally trigger moderate earthquakes.
Following the quake, Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin said in a statement shared on Telegram, a widely used messaging platform in Russia, that there had been no reports of structural damage or loss of life.
Authorities have not indicated any disruptions to infrastructure or public services, and no further official warnings were issued in the immediate aftermath of the tremor.
