Amnesty International U.K. on Tuesday called on the British government to prevent and punish Israel’s genocide in Gaza after a U.N. commission concluded that Israel is committing genocide in the enclave.
“We welcome the U.N. commission’s findings that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza – a significant and necessary moment,” said Kristyan Benedict, Amnesty U.K.’s crisis response manager.
Benedict said the government “must change” its stance and take action without delay, stressing that all states, including the U.K., have a binding legal obligation under the Genocide Convention.
“The Government must now stop indulging in genocide denial. It must urgently fulfil its legal and moral responsibility by taking immediate, decisive steps to prevent and punish genocide,” he said.
Amnesty reiterated demands for the U.K. to halt all arms exports to Israel, support the International Criminal Court and enforce its arrest warrants, fully implement International Court of Justice rulings, and ban trade with Israeli settlements.
The appeal came as a U.N. inquiry, released Tuesday, determined that Israel’s war on Gaza constitutes genocide.
“It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention,” said Navi Pillay, chair of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
Israel’s war on Gaza has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians since October 2023 and devastated the territory, which now faces famine, according to local and U.N. figures. Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
