A Russian Gerbera-2 drone carrying explosives was found in the sea off northern Poland this week, Polish officials said Wednesday, prompting a military investigation into its origin and intended target.
Military affairs prosecutor Bartosz Okoniewski said the drone, discovered Monday, had been secured and confirmed to be armed.
“It contained a warhead with a detonator,” he added, without giving further details.
The military will further examine the drone to determine its origin and what its intended target may have been.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Monday that the military had located the drone near the village of Rusinowo in northwestern Poland and recovered it from the sea.
He said the drone was believed to have been lost by Russia during test maneuvers over the Baltic Sea.
The military affairs department of the district prosecutor’s office in Szczecin has opened proceedings over the incident.
Okoniewski said investigators were examining a suspected offense involving “causing an incident that endangers the life or health of many people and property of great value.”
Poland, a member of NATO and the European Union, borders both Ukraine and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave.
The country has faced repeated drone incursions into its territory since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
