At least 7 killed, 30 injured in car explosion in Syria
At least seven killed and 30 injured in a car blast at a market in Azaz, Syria, an area controlled by Syrian rebel factions supported by Türkiye
At least seven individuals were killed and 30 others injured on Saturday in a car explosion at a bustling market in the Syrian town of Azaz, located near the Turkish border.
The incident occurred during the peak of late-night shopping activities following iftar, a dinner to mark the breaking of the daily fast in Ramadan.
“The timing of the explosion coincided with heavy crowds of shoppers,” said Yaseen Shalabi, who was present near the blast site with his family.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Azaz, a predominantly Arab town controlled by Syrian rebel factions supported by Türkiye and opposed to Syrian regime leader Bashar Assad’s regime, had experienced relative calm since a car explosion struck it over two years ago.
Cities in the northwestern border region have frequently faced bombings in crowded civilian areas in recent years.
According to the civil defense forces, at least 30 individuals were wounded, with some critically injured individuals being transported to nearby hospitals.
Residents and rebels in the mainly Arab-populated rebel-held northwest have often suspected the Kurdish-led YPG, which controls significant territories in northeast and northern Syria east of the Euphrates, of being behind such attacks. Others point fingers at groups loyal to Assad.
The YPG has consistently denied these allegations.
