Azerbaijan summoned Russia's charge d'affaires following a deadly police operation in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg that left two Azerbaijani nationals dead and several others wounded, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry announced.
Pyotr Volokovih, charge d'affaires at the Russian Embassy in Baku, was called to the Foreign Ministry after Russian security forces conducted raids on homes where Azerbaijanis resided in Yekaterinburg on Thursday.
According to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, two Azerbaijanis were "brutally killed" during the operation, several people were seriously injured, and nine individuals were detained.
The ministry said Azerbaijan expressed strong condemnation of the incident and demanded an immediate investigation, along with criminal proceedings against all those involved in the violence, according to the statement.
The operation targeted the Seferov family, originally from Azerbaijan's Agdam city, according to reports in Azerbaijani media. Russian forces simultaneously raided more than 10 apartments where family members resided.
Brothers Ziyaddin and Huseyin Seferov were killed during the operation. Nine people were detained while three others were hospitalized with serious injuries.
Russia's Interior Ministry said the operation was conducted as part of an investigation into crimes committed in previous years. The ministry stated that the operation was carried out with support from Russia's National Guard Special Rapid Response Unit (SOBR).
In its statement, Russian authorities said several individuals suspected of involvement in various crimes that occurred in Yekaterinburg in past years were detained, and searches were conducted at their residences. The Russian statement did not provide information about casualties.
