White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will leave her post at the end of the month, President Trump announced Wednesday, citing her desire to spend more time with her young children.
Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, praising Leavitt as "one of my most trusted aides" and saying he "totally" understood and respected her decision to step back from the demanding role.
Leavitt, 28, addressed her departure in her own post, describing the balancing act of serving as press secretary while raising two young children, including a daughter born during her tenure. She called the period "the most rewarding yet challenging season" of her life.
"The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary," she said.
Trump said Leavitt will not be leaving his orbit entirely. He announced she will become one of his top outside advisers and "an influential voice within the Republican Party" as the party looks ahead to the midterm elections, where Trump said the goal is to "defy History" and secure a win.
Leavitt has been a longtime member of Trump's political operation, having worked with him since 2018 and through his 2024 reelection campaign before joining the White House. Trump credited her with being "a real leader" who fought for "Justice, Liberty, and Freedom" throughout that time, calling her "one of the best White House Press Secretaries in the History of the Office."
Trump's post framed Leavitt's exit as a natural transition rather than a break, thanking her "for a job well done" while signaling she would continue to play a visible role in his political operation ahead of the midterms. No successor was named in the announcement.
