Brazil summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires in Brasilia to the Foreign Ministry after images emerged showing Israeli security forces mistreating Global Sumud Flotilla activists, according to national media.
Israel’s charge d’affaires in Brasilia, Rasha Athamni, was summoned after what the Brazilian media described as a “provocative video” shared by far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
The video showed Ben-Gvir at the Ashdod Port, where activists were being held, and included images of Israeli security forces mistreating activists.
Clelio Nivaldo Crippa Filho, head of the Middle East Department at Brazil’s Foreign Ministry, met Athamni and conveyed Brazil’s discomfort over the images, according to media reports.
Brazil also said all detained activists, including four Brazilian citizens, should be released.
The Brazilian Foreign Ministry had earlier reacted to Israel over its mistreatment of the Sumud Flotilla activists and described the situation as illegal.
“Brazil demands the immediate release of all detained activists, including four Brazilian citizens, as well as full respect for their rights and dignity in accordance with the international obligations assumed by the State of Israel,” the ministry said in its May 20 statement.
Ben-Gvir shared the footage on the U.S.-based X social media platform after visiting the Ashdod Port, where the activists were being held.
The video showed a female activist shouting “Free Palestine” as Ben-Gvir passed by.
Israeli police then intervened harshly and forced the woman to the ground, according to the footage.
During the incident, Ben-Gvir was heard saying: “This is how it should be done.”
