Russian President Vladimir Putin said BRICS has become an important force in strengthening multilateralism and shaping what he described as a fair multipolar world order, while highlighting the bloc’s growing economic weight.
Speaking at the expanded BRICS+ Leaders Summit in New Delhi, Putin said international interest in the group’s activities was increasing.
“BRICS has become an important force in the process of strengthening multilateralism in international relations,” Putin said. “Our association is playing a role in building a fair multipolar world order.”
Putin said trade among BRICS countries had reached $1.2 trillion.
He added that BRICS members account for about a quarter of global exports and 40% of global gross domestic product.
Putin said Russia has proposed several initiatives within BRICS, including the creation of a payment infrastructure, a joint insurance mechanism and a grain exchange.
Putin also called for strengthening the BRICS Development Bank.
He said the bank has financed 123 projects worth about $40 billion to date.
