Evre Basak Clarke, a Turkish painter and digital artist living in Buckinghamshire, England, has died following a battle with cancer that began in 2023.
Clarke, 40, married British citizen Philip Clarke in 2023, and the couple welcomed their son Oscar the same year. However, she was subsequently diagnosed with metastatic bowel cancer that had spread to her liver and lungs. The artist announced that doctors had given her a prognosis of 3-4 weeks to live.
To cover treatment costs and secure her infant son Oscar's future, Clarke launched a GoFundMe campaign titled "Evre's Fight: Baby Oscar's Future." The fundraising effort attracted support from approximately 6,700 donors and raised £230,000 ($311,052).
The crowdfunding campaign quickly became a subject of debate on social media platforms. Some users criticized the high donation amount, questioned statements made in campaign materials, and raised concerns about transparency. Various platforms carried allegations that the artist had removed medical documentation, made her social media accounts private, and deleted certain statements.
Clarke's family announced her death through a social media statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Evre Basak Clarke. After a long battle with cancer, Evre spent her final three weeks surrounded by the love of her family and closest friends. For now, we ask that you respect our privacy as we try to cope with this loss."
British comedian Ricky Gervais had previously recorded a special video message for Clarke, appearing with his cat to send his regards during her illness.
The case highlights ongoing discussions about medical crowdfunding transparency and the challenges faced by families dealing with terminal diagnoses while living abroad.
