Burning object thrown at Israeli embassy, says Dutch police
Israeli embassy in The Hague becomes latest European diplomatic mission to face serious security threat, with police arresting suspect after the attack on the embassy
Dutch police have arrested a suspect for allegedly throwing a burning object at the Israeli embassy in The Hague today.
This incident occurred amid heightened security because of the war ongoing war in Gaza, as confirmed by police sources.
“At around 10:50 a.m., someone threw a burning object toward the Israeli embassy. We have arrested one suspect,” a police spokesperson said.
They further assured that the incident led to no injuries and that authorities have cordoned off a substantial area around the embassy for investigation.
The backdrop of this incident is the increased global security around Israeli embassies following Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
In light of the ongoing situation, officials took prompt action today.
They evacuated the Israeli embassy in The Hague, and police have closed roads surrounding the building.
Local media reports describe the immediate vicinity of the embassy as secluded with fences and black cloth.
“I am very well aware of how disruptive this is for the local area and traffic that can no longer use a section of Johan de Wittlaan. When I can tell you anything about changes to the situation, I will,” Jan van Zanen, the Mayor of The Hague, emphasized the need for stringent security measures.
In recent months, Israeli embassies in Europe have witnessed similar security concerns.
February saw a bomb scare at the Israeli ambassador’s residence in The Hague, although no explosives were found.
Additionally, in January, authorities in Sweden destroyed a live device at the Israeli embassy in Stockholm, suspecting it as a potential terrorist crime.
