A tour bus carrying passengers home from a trip to Niagara Falls crashed in New York state on Friday, killing several people and injuring many others, according to state officials.
The bus, which was carrying around 50 passengers at the time of the accident, had been returning from a trip to Niagara Falls, a major tourist destination on the U.S.-Canada border known for its large waterfalls.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, the elected head of government for the Buffalo-area county in western New York, said on social media platform X that “there are many serious injuries” and confirmed “multiple fatalities,” citing information released by New York State Police.
Officials did not immediately provide an exact number of those killed or injured.
State police spokesman James O’Callaghan told reporters the bus was carrying more than 50 people from New York City to Niagara Falls for a day of sightseeing and was heading back home when it crashed. Many of the passengers were of Indian, Chinese and Filipino descent, he added.
“For unknown reasons, the vehicle lost control, went into the median, overcorrected and ended up in the ditch,” O’Callaghan said. “This bus was going full speed. It did not hit any other vehicle.”
The spokesman said some passengers remained trapped inside the wreckage while others had been ejected on impact. At least one child was among the dead, though he did not provide a specific death toll.
