California has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, the two major Islamic holidays, under a new law signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Assembly Bill 2017 adds both celebrations to California's official state holiday calendar and sets out provisions for public schools, community colleges, and eligible state employees.
Under the new law, public schools and community colleges may close for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha through their existing local procedures.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting, while Eid al-Adha is observed during the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
The measure also allows eligible state employees to receive holiday credit for the two occasions.
The law describes the recognition as a civil calendar decision that reflects the holidays' significance to communities across the state.
"The designation of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays is a civil calendar determination that acknowledges their cultural significance to California communities," the law states.
