A car drove into a group of pedestrians in the southwestern German city of Stuttgart on Friday, injuring at least eight people, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 6 p.m. local time in the city center, when a black SUV struck a crowd, according to local media. Police confirmed that the driver was arrested and said the number of injured could rise. Several of the victims sustained serious injuries.

Stuttgart police said on its X account that "a car had driven into a group of people" in the central Olgaeck area while the fire service said on its account that there were "several hurt, including some seriously injured".

“The area has been cordoned off extensively, and injured persons are being treated at the scene,” the Stuttgart fire department said in a statement on social media.

Police have not said whether the act was intentional or accidental and have not released the driver’s identity or other details.

'No indications of an attack'

Later in the evening, Stuttgart police said there were “no indications of an attack.”

In a statement posted on its X account, the force noted: “Based on our current investigations... our colleagues at the scene believe this was a tragic accident.”

Meanwhile, according to the public broadcaster SWR, the driver, who was arrested and questioned by police shortly after the incident, is a German national in his early 40s.
