CNN has issued a strong defense of its senior White House correspondent, Kristen Holmes, after President Donald Trump publicly rebuked her during a press interaction and the White House's official social media accounts followed with personal attacks against her.
"Kristen Holmes is one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House," the network said in a statement, adding that she was simply doing her job by asking a "tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people."
The confrontation began when Holmes pressed Trump on remarks made by Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who had accused the president of prioritizing leisure and travel with staff over official duties.
Rather than directly addressing the senator's allegation, Trump dismissed Ossoff as a "Pee-wee Herman look-alike" before turning his criticism toward Holmes herself. "You are a loud, boisterous person. You are fake news. Be quiet," he told her.
The dispute did not end there. An official White House social media account went on to describe Holmes as a "disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession."
A follow-up post from the same account went further, suggesting that Holmes's children would one day be "sickened and embarrassed" by what it called her "callous and vindictive" questioning.
CNN responded forcefully, stating that while public officials are free to challenge or disagree with reporting, personal insults are "beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press." The network added, "We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms."
Trump has long maintained an adversarial relationship with the press throughout his time in office, frequently criticizing media coverage he views as unfavorable and, at times, directing pointed personal attacks at individual journalists.
