Colombian authorities report that 281 people have died and 379 are still missing after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit western Colombia, according to the EFE news agency early Friday.
Since the earthquake struck on Monday, nearly 3,971 people have been reported injured, EFE said, citing Colombian officials.
The earthquake destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, and other important buildings in several cities.
The epicenter was near San Jose del Palmar in Choco, a region on Colombia's Pacific coast that borders Panama. People also felt tremors in other parts of the country, including Bogota, and in nearby countries.
Rescue teams are still searching collapsed buildings for survivors. Authorities warn that the chances of finding people alive under the rubble are getting smaller.
