Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated Wednesday that Greenland is not for sale, pushing back directly against renewed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump who said the autonomous Arctic territory must come under American control.

Both leaders were in Ankara for the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government when Trump publicly revived his longstanding position that Greenland should be part of the United States.

Frederiksen, speaking to media on the sidelines of the gathering, was unequivocal in her response.

"Greenland is of course not for sale," she said. "We have made that clear from the very beginning."

Frederiksen added that Denmark expects NATO to respect its sovereignty over the territory.

Trump revives a familiar demand

Trump's remarks in Ankara mark the latest chapter in a prolonged dispute over Greenland's future. The U.S. president stated that the island is important to the United States and that it should be under American control, echoing positions he has aired repeatedly since his first term in office.

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has been at the center of geopolitical attention in recent years as the Arctic region gains strategic importance due to its vast natural resources and critical shipping routes.
