The death toll from a landslide in Chongqing, a municipality in southwestern China, rose to 51 on Friday, with 10 people still unaccounted for, state media reported.
The landslide struck on the morning of July 17 in the Hanjia sub-district of Pengshui Miao and Tujia Autonomous County, an area within the Chongqing municipality, along a section of the Wujiang River. The disaster, triggered by rainfall, buried more than 10 residential buildings, according to state-run news agency Xinhua.
More than 1,100 residents were evacuated from the area, Xinhua reported. Of the 10 people rescued, three have since been discharged from the hospital.
Authorities have concluded land search efforts at the site. Underwater searches and river cleanup operations are ongoing, along with efforts to restore traffic and normal life in the area.
