EU condemns raid on Mexican embassy in Ecuador
EU condemns Ecuador following raid on Mexico’s embassy in Quito, where former vice president Jorge Glas was detained on corruption allegations
European Union condemned Ecuador on Sunday following the recent events in Ecuador, wherein police conducted a raid on Mexico’s embassy in Quito. In response to allegations of corruption, former vice president Jorge Glas was detained.
The EU stressed the value of maintaining diplomatic immunity and adhering to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations in a statement that was made public on Sunday. The 27-nation bloc emphasized how important it is to protect diplomatic missions and their staff’s integrity in order to uphold international law, stability, and international collaboration as well as to promote international confidence and cooperation.
After Jorge Glas sought asylum at the Mexican embassy in December of last year due to an arrest warrant being issued for him on charges of corruption, things became more serious. The government of Daniel Noboa, the president of Ecuador, called this action an “illicit act.”
The elite soldiers who carried a battering ram made the Friday attack on the embassy possible. International alarm has been aroused by this egregious intrusion into diplomatic grounds, which are regarded as sovereign territory. Such an incidence is extremely unusual.
The EU maintains that any infringement on the inviolability of diplomatic missions constitutes a blatant violation of the Vienna Convention and has to be strongly denounced.
