European Council President Antonio Costa urged deeper transatlantic cooperation Sunday to achieve what he termed a "sustainable peace" in Ukraine, emphasizing that any resolution must fully respect Kyiv's sovereignty.

Speaking after a Coalition of the Willing meeting, Costa took to social media platform X to outline the European Union's position on future peace negotiations, stressing Ukraine's right to set its own terms for any potential settlement.

"Transatlantic unity is paramount at this moment to achieve a sustainable peace in Ukraine," Costa wrote. "As I underlined during today's meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, if no ceasefire is agreed, the EU and the US must increase pressure on Russia."

Ukraine must retain control over peace terms

The statement comes as international discussions continue over potential pathways to end the conflict that began with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Costa's remarks underscore the EU's position that Ukraine must retain control over peace negotiations rather than having terms imposed by outside powers.

"Ukraine's sovereign right to determine its conditions for peace must be respected," Costa emphasized, reinforcing a key principle that has guided Western support for Kyiv throughout the conflict.

US security guarantees welcomed by Brussels

The European leader also praised Washington's readiness to participate in security arrangements for Ukraine, viewing such commitments as essential for preventing future conflicts. Costa described security guarantees as crucial "to deter future Russian aggression and to ensure, together, a just and lasting peace in Ukraine."

"Europe stands ready to do its part," Costa added, signaling continued EU commitment to Ukraine's security framework beyond any immediate peace settlement.

The Coalition of the Willing, an informal grouping of nations supporting Ukraine, has emerged as a key forum for coordinating Western assistance and diplomatic strategy regarding the ongoing conflict.
