European Council President Antonio Costa on Monday praised Türkiye for its role in supporting Ukraine during its war with Russia, following a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the sidelines of a U.N. conference on the two-state solution.

Costa described the meeting as “good” and said, “Türkiye is an important partner in supporting Ukraine, participating in the efforts of the Coalition of the Willing.” He added that the European Union will continue to work with Türkiye to achieve “a just and lasting peace.”

Istanbul has hosted three rounds of renewed peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv this year — on May 16, June 2 and July 23 — which produced prisoner swaps and led to the exchange of draft memoranda outlining both sides’ positions for a potential peace deal.

Erdogan, speaking separately at a dinner hosted by the Turkish American National Steering Committee in New York, said Türkiye is in consultations with U.S. President Donald Trump and his team on regional developments, particularly Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine war and Syria.

“In Trump’s second term, our contacts are intensified and institutional dialogue gained momentum,” Erdogan said, adding he would meet Trump on Thursday to discuss “many important issues.”

Erdogan at UN General Assembly

Erdogan is scheduled to address the high-level General Debate of the 80th session of the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday. Leaders of member states will present their priorities in the Assembly Hall before a global audience.

Brazil has opened the General Debate every year since 1955, except in 1983 and 1984, followed by the host country, the United States. Erdogan will be the fourth speaker on Tuesday’s opening day.

Before departing for New York, Erdogan said what distinguishes this year’s assembly from previous sessions is that many countries are expected to announce their recognition of the State of Palestine.
