Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that Israel's military actions in Gaza have reversed decades of regional development and could have global repercussions if left unchecked, speaking at the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.

Fidan characterizes Gaza offensive as threat to multilateral order

During a session titled "Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Issues and Artificial Intelligence," Fidan characterized Israel's Gaza offensive as genocide that has undermined progress built over decades in the region.

"The drama experienced by the Palestinian people is at the center of our discussions on multilateralism today," Fidan said, according to information obtained from Foreign Ministry sources.

"This situation is a serious crisis in terms of the legitimacy of institutions responsible for ensuring international peace and security. If Israel's aggression and expansionism are not brought under control, the consequences will be felt on a global scale," he added.

The Turkish foreign minister emphasized that stepping back from multilateralism was not an acceptable option, describing it as a long-standing driver of progress that affects daily life from civil aviation to public health systems, from fair trade to digital standards.

Türkiye positions itself as peace mediator in regional conflicts

Türkiye has focused its efforts on peaceful solutions and reducing tensions in the region, Fidan said, expressing Ankara's readiness to fully support lasting peace in the area.

Addressing broader economic challenges, Fidan noted that globalization has deepened mutual dependencies, making value chains more fragile, particularly in energy and critical minerals sectors. He stressed the need for growth, employment and free trade for development, which must be secured through a fair, rules-based and predictable international trade system.

As the world moves toward multipolarity, Fidan highlighted artificial intelligence governance as a critical priority, warning that necessary measures must be taken to prevent AI from becoming a new tool of domination.
