The Casablanca Court of Appeal on Thursday sentenced the former minister and ex-mayor of Fquih Ben Salah for embezzling public funds.
The court ordered him to pay 30 million Moroccan dirhams ($3.25 million) in damages to the municipality, which is the civil party in this case that has been open for nearly two years.
According to local media outlet Medias24, the defense has already announced its intention to appeal.
Moubdii has been detained since 2023 following a corruption complaint by the Moroccan Association for the Protection of Public Property. The legal challenge targeted irregularities in public contracts awarded by the Fquih Ben Salah municipal council, which Moubdii had chaired since 1997.
Defense lawyer Brahim Amoussi told AFP an appeal had been planned, adding that he could not provide further details on the sentence.
Moubdii was "sentenced to 13 years in prison" along with "a fine of 30 million dirhams," Amoussi added.
Moubdii was the minister of Civil Service and Administration Modernization between 2013 and 2016 and is a leader in parliament of the centre-right Popular Movement.
His election to chair parliament's justice and legislation committee sparked outrage on social media, and he has since resigned from the post.
