German government deputy spokesperson Steffen Meyer said Türkiye plays an important role not only as a NATO ally but also as a counterpart on many political issues.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Meyer recalled that the visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to Türkiye on October 30 was announced last Friday. He underlined that this will be Merz’s first official visit to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Meyer said the visit will mainly focus on the meeting between Chancellor Merz and President Erdogan, describing it as “very important.” He added, “Türkiye plays an important role not only as a NATO ally but also as a counterpart on many political matters.”
Meyer noted that President Erdogan and Chancellor Merz have previously held discussions and that this visit will allow both sides to continue their dialogue. He said the two leaders will address a range of bilateral and foreign policy issues.
“There are a number of important bilateral issues between the two countries,” Meyer said, noting that foreign policy topics remain a priority.
“Of course, in all the chancellor’s trips in recent months, Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has already been a prominent issue. In this regard, we are looking forward to this visit with hope,” he added.
