King Charles III said on Wednesday that the United Kingdom faces growing threats from an “increasingly dangerous and volatile world,” pointing to the conflict in the Middle East as the most recent example.
Speaking during the State Opening of Parliament, Charles said the U.K.’s energy, defense and economic security would be tested.
“An increasingly dangerous and volatile world threatens the United Kingdom with the conflict in the Middle East, only the most recent example,” Charles said.
He said the government would take decisions aimed at protecting the country’s energy, defense and economic security.
Charles said the government would introduce legislation to take advantage of new trading opportunities, including a bill to strengthen ties with the European Union.
“My ministers will introduce legislation to take advantage of new trading opportunities, including a bill to strengthen ties with the EU,” he said.
He added that the government would also seek to improve relations with European partners as part of efforts to strengthen European security.
Charles said the government “will continue to promote long-term peace in the Middle East and the two-state solution in Israel and Palestine.”
Charles said the U.K.’s energy security requires long-term investment and reform. He said recent events in the Middle East had demonstrated the importance of those steps.
“My ministers will take decisions that protect the energy, defense and economic security of the United Kingdom,” he said.
