A Russian-made Indian Air Force An-32 military transport aircraft crashed on Saturday while attempting to land at an air force station in the northeastern city of Jorhat, the military said.
“An IAF An-32 aircraft met with an accident today while landing at Jorhat. A court of inquiry is being constituted to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the Indian Air Force said in a statement.
The military did not immediately provide details on casualties or the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Indian broadcaster NDTV aired footage from the crash site showing a thick plume of black smoke rising into the air, with the aircraft appearing to have broken apart on impact.
The An-32, a twin-engine turboprop, is specially designed to perform well at high altitudes and in extreme climates.
The Indian air force operates about 100 of them for military supplies and civilian aid in the country's remotest mountain areas.
The last major crash involving the plane occurred in 2019 in Arunachal Pradesh state, near the border with China, when 13 people were killed.
