Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto declared Monday that his country will recognize Israel only when Israel acknowledges Palestinian statehood, speaking at a high-level international conference focused on resolving the Palestinian issue.
Subianto made the announcement during the High-Level International Conference on Finding Solutions to the Palestinian Issue and Implementing the Two-State Solution, organized under United Nations auspices with leadership from France and Saudi Arabia.
"Indonesia declares that it will immediately recognize the State of Israel and support all guarantees for Israel's security the moment Israel recognizes the Palestinian State and Palestine's independence," Subianto told the gathering.
The Indonesian leader emphasized that countries' responsibilities regarding the Palestinian issue affect not only Palestine's fate but also Israel's future and the United Nations' credibility.
Subianto highlighted the devastating human toll since Oct. 7, when Israel's attacks on Gaza began, noting that thousands of civilians have been killed.
"Thousands of innocent people have been killed, most of them women and children, and famine and destruction have occurred. A humanitarian disaster is happening before our eyes. We condemn all acts of violence against innocent civilians," he said.
The Indonesian president called for an immediate end to Israel's attacks on Gaza, describing it as the "greatest priority," while demanding recognition of Palestine and an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
Subianto renewed calls for a two-state solution, stating that "recognition should mean a real opportunity for lasting peace. This must be real peace for all parties."
He praised France, Canada, Australia, Britain and Portugal for recognizing Palestine as a state, saying they had positioned themselves "on the right side of history."
The president concluded by expressing Indonesia's readiness to fulfill its role in the journey toward peace, emphasizing that state guarantees must be provided for Palestine.
"We are ready to fulfill our duty in this journey toward peace," Subianto said, reiterating his call for Palestinian recognition, an end to the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, and the establishment of lasting peace.
