Talks between U.S., Ukrainian, and European negotiators on ending Russia's war in Ukraine ended earlier than planned in Miami, with no second day expected, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) correspondent Alex Raufoglu reported Friday, citing sources.

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff described the meeting as "constructive," saying it covered winter preparedness, security guarantees and Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.

He did not say whether the parties would meet Saturday as originally planned.

Washington is seeking a unified U.S.-Ukrainian-European proposal it can put to Russia within weeks, aiming for a breakthrough before winter and ahead of November's U.S. midterm elections.

'Some ideas' on territory

The six-hour talks on Friday included Witkoff and Jared Kushner, a Ukrainian delegation, and representatives of Europe and NATO, a person familiar with the talks told Reuters.

Topics included a post-war package with U.S. and European security guarantees, an economic plan and a path to EU membership for Ukraine, the person said. The delegations also discussed "some ideas" on territory and a Europe-Russia security architecture, the person said, without elaborating.

Talks 'productive' ahead of next Russia engagement

"Today, representatives from the United States, the E3, the European Commission, Ukraine, and NATO met in Miami and held constructive discussions on potential avenues to de-escalate and conclude the war with Russia ahead of winter and advance efforts toward a durable and lasting peace," Witkoff wrote on X.

He said the talks covered "energy resilience, grain exports," security guarantees and "longer-term arrangements for Ukraine’s and Europe’s security to prevent future conflicts."

"The exchange was productive and helped identify areas for further exploration ahead of the United States’ next engagement with Russia," Witkoff added.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Thursday that the conflict had reached a dangerous impasse. "We have tried, and we will continue to try, and do what we can to facilitate a negotiated settlement to the end of that war," Rubio told reporters during an appearance in Lisbon with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel.

"The other way that stalemates end is through escalation," he told reporters in Lisbon.

"In the end, we do not believe that there is a military solution to this conflict, to this war," the top U.S. diplomat noted. Rubio stressed that the U.S. is "not going to invest in pointless processes if we can't make progress."

Efforts to end the war have stalled over Russia’s demand to control all of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, which President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has rejected.

Russia occupies roughly one-fifth of Ukraine.

The Kremlin has signaled three-way talks could resume in October, though no date has been set, as the Miami talks' early end leaves next steps unclear.
