The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that more than 1,500 people were displaced across Sudan as violence continues between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Civilians flee North and South Kordofan

According to an IOM statement on Sunday, 1,205 people were displaced from the cities of Bara and Umm Ruwaba in North Kordofan state, while another 360 fled from Al-Abbasiya and Delami in South Kordofan due to worsening insecurity.

The displaced moved to various areas within North Kordofan and several towns in White Nile state.

The IOM noted that the new displacements followed earlier movements in late October, when 36,625 people fled North Kordofan amid intensifying attacks.

RSF attacks trigger casualties, displacement

Sudanese authorities reported casualties from a drone attack by the RSF on Zareba al-Sheikh al-Burai in North Kordofan, while the Sudan Doctors Network said RSF forces killed 38 civilians in Umm Dam Haj Ahmed.

Authorities said around 1,850 people were displaced after another RSF assault on Umm Dam Haj Ahmed.

The RSF, which recently seized control of Bara, denied targeting civilians.

Thousands flee El-Fasher in North Darfur

Local media reported that about 62,000 people fled El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, after the RSF captured the city in late October.

Many of the displaced have reached Al-Dabba in Sudan’s Northern State after traveling over 1,200 kilometers under harsh conditions, while thousands remain stranded without assistance.

Doctors Without Borders urges safe passage for civilians

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) called on the RSF and allied armed groups to allow civilians to leave El-Fasher as conditions worsen.

“We urgently call on the RSF and allied armed groups to spare civilians and let them flee El-Fasher,” said Michel Olivier Lacharite, MSF’s head of emergencies.

The organization urged the members of the QUAD, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt, to act to stop what it described as a “bloodbath.”

MSF warned that the international community “cannot look away” as the humanitarian crisis deepens.

Worsening humanitarian crisis

Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been locked in a war that regional and international mediations have failed to end.

The conflict has killed 20,000 people and displaced more than 15 million as refugees and internally displaced persons, according to UN and local reports.
