Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, as well as efforts toward resolving the Ukraine crisis, during a phone call with his US counterpart Donald Trump, the Kremlin announced Saturday.

This marked the fifth phone call between the two leaders as part of efforts to reset relations since Trump took office, representing a clear shift from the previous administration’s approach under Joe Biden, AFP reports.

“The dangerous escalation in the Middle East was of course at the centre of the exchange,” the Kremlin said, following Israel’s airstrikes on Iran on Friday and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on Israel.

During their call, Putin and Trump did not rule out resuming negotiations on the Iran nuclear issue, with Trump stating that US negotiators are ready to engage with Iranian representatives.

The Russian president also indicated that Moscow is prepared to mediate between Israel and Iran.

Both leaders expressed concern over the recent Middle East escalation but remained open to diplomatic solutions.

Putin updated Trump on the progress of agreements made between Russian and Ukrainian delegations during their June 2 meeting in Istanbul.

Putin conveyed Russia’s readiness to continue negotiations with Ukraine after June 22, to which Trump responded by reaffirming his interest in a swift resolution to the conflict.

The Kremlin also noted that Putin congratulated Trump on his birthday, and both reflected on the “brotherhood in arms” shared by Russia and the United States during World War Two.
