Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Sunday that the latest U.S. sanctions against Russia are an “unfriendly” step that has harmed bilateral relations, adding that Moscow must act in its own best interests.
Speaking to Rossiya-1 television, Peskov commented on Washington’s recent decision to impose new sanctions on Russian companies. “This is an unfriendly step. These actions have truly damaged the possibility of restoring bilateral relations. However, this does not mean we should abandon our goals. We must do what benefits us,” he said.
He stressed that Russia would continue to pursue policies based on its own interests. “Despite the nuances expressed by U.S. President Donald Trump, we must focus on our interests. Our interest is to maintain good relations with all countries, including the United States,” Peskov stated.
On Oct. 23, the U.S. Treasury Department added Russia’s two major oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, along with their subsidiaries, to its sanctions list. The department said the decision was taken because Moscow had not shown “serious commitment to the peace process” to end the war in Ukraine.
Commenting on the situation in Ukraine, Peskov said the peace process had stalled. “The Ukrainians do not want the negotiation process. The Europeans are pushing them toward it. We see that the European Union is in a state of war hysteria. This is the reason for the pause,” he said.
Peskov also said Moscow would respond to Western attempts to seize frozen Russian assets. “We will respond to such actions and will use all available legal instruments,” he said.
According to Peskov, despite tensions with the West, Russia’s approach remains centered on protecting national interests while seeking constructive ties with other nations.
