The West has failed to stop the emergence of a multipolar world but refuses to accept the new reality and is staging provocations because of it, Russian Foreign Ministry Ambassador-at-Large Alexander Trofimov said.
Trofimov made the remarks in an interview with TASS on the sidelines of an expert dialogue held by the Valdai International Discussion Club.
"We are all witnessing the formation of a multipolar world, and against this backdrop, those who previously dominated are losing their advantages and, accordingly, clinging to them and trying to prevent the development of individual states," Trofimov said.
He said various tools of force were being used for that purpose, including provocations and the escalation of conflicts.
Asked about the conditions needed to move from what was described as "fights without rules" to dialogue, Trofimov said multipolarity was emerging for objective reasons.
"It is, of course, possible to resist the formation of a new objectivity, but the transition to this objectivity has already largely taken place," he said.
Trofimov said the international economic configuration was changing, the global economy was being restructured, and development potential was being redistributed from the Euro-Atlantic region to Eurasia.
He said economic power was shifting and new centers of influence were developing outside the Western community.
Trofimov added that the number of states showing greater independence in foreign and domestic policy was increasing.
He said this was reflected in deepening integration processes on the Eurasian continent, as well as in other parts of the world, including Latin America and Africa.
Trofimov said those processes were taking place with a central role for the countries and peoples of those regions.
