Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure left hundreds of thousands of people without electricity in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions on Sunday, according to local authorities and an energy provider.

Ukraine is preparing for another wartime winter as Russia intensifies daily drone and missile attacks on the country’s power network.

More than 600,000 lose power in Dnipropetrovsk

In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, more than 600,000 residents were left without electricity after overnight strikes damaged key energy facilities, power company DTEK said on Telegram.

The company said crews were working to restore power, but repeated attacks were complicating repair efforts.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, a Russian drone struck what officials described as a critical infrastructure facility, according to Zlatopil Mayor Mykola Baksheyev.

“Nearly 250,000 customers in the Kharkiv region were left without power,” Baksheyev said.

Repair work was underway, but authorities had not determined when electricity would be fully restored.

Strikes follow major attack on energy network

The latest strikes came a day after Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said a large-scale attack on energy facilities had caused blackouts in five regions and significantly disrupted electricity transmission in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of intensifying attacks in an effort to pressure Kyiv ahead of U.S.-brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy grid and infrastructure during its four-and-a-half-year invasion.

Ukraine is now entering another winter of war, with temperatures already hovering around freezing.
