South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun is set to travel to Washington this week for talks with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, with a $350 billion investment package and a possible South Korean military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz among the issues expected to be discussed.
Cho is due to depart Thursday for a visit lasting through Saturday, South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
“The two sides will discuss a wide range of issues, including South Korea-U.S. relations, the Korean Peninsula and regional and global issues,” the ministry said.
South Korea committed to $350 billion in U.S. investments under an agreement reached last year to avoid the most severe tariffs threatened by President Donald Trump.
Specific projects and the final terms of the investment package are still being negotiated.
The issue is expected to feature in Cho’s talks with Rubio during the Washington visit.
Seoul is also considering a possible military deployment to the Strait of Hormuz, which has become a major point of contention in the war launched by Israel and the U.S. against Iran.
Trump has pressed South Korea, a U.S. ally, to assist in the strategic waterway.
Iran, however, has warned Seoul against becoming involved in the Strait of Hormuz.
Cho and Rubio are also expected to discuss developments on the Korean Peninsula as well as other regional and global issues during the visit.
