A suspect identified as one of the planners of the 2016 assassination of Russia’s ambassador to Türkiye has changed his name after fleeing to Canada, according to security sources cited in Turkish media.

Cemal Karaata, described as a senior figure within the FETO network and a suspect linked to the killing of Andrey Karlov, is reported to have changed his name to Salih Ada after leaving Türkiye.

Karaata, who is sought by Turkish authorities with a Red Notice, is said to be living in Canada under his new identity.

Reports say he works as a psychotherapist at a company named Qualia Counselling Services, based at an address in Waterloo, Ontario, where he provides counseling related to anxiety, depression and anger management.

Before fleeing Türkiye, Karaata was an assistant professor in the English Department at the now-closed Fatih University.

He reportedly used the code names “Sadik” and “Yavuz” and is described as having been part of FETO’s alleged covert structure within the National Intelligence Organization (MIT).

Fears of abduction and security contacts

According to the report, one reason cited for Karaata’s name change is fear of being abducted by Russian operatives due to his alleged role in the assassination.

It is claimed that he lives under heightened concern about possible attacks and holds periodic meetings with Canadian security authorities.

Allegations of ongoing network support

The report further claims that FETO continues to support members of what is described as a spy network operating in Europe and North America, ensuring financial assistance, security measures and, in some cases, identity changes.

It alleges that individuals considered key figures are protected through the use of different Turkish or foreign names and are financially supported by the organization, including covering housing, transportation and education costs for family members.

Disparities within the organization

Following the failed coup attempt in Türkiye in July 2016, individuals described as part of FETO’s covert intelligence structure were sentenced to prison terms of up to 30 years in various cases, including those related to the Karlov assassination.

The report claims that while some members were prosecuted in Türkiye, senior figures such as Karaata fled abroad and continue to live comfortably with organizational support.
