U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday that his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing was “extremely positive” and invited Xi and Chinese first lady Peng Liyuan to visit the White House on Sept. 24.
Trump made the remarks during a state banquet dinner with Xi after talks between the U.S. and Chinese delegations at the Great Hall of the People.
“Thank you again, President Xi, for this beautiful welcome. And tonight, it is my honor to extend an invitation to you and Madam Peng to visit us at the White House this Sept. 24 and we look forward to it,” Trump said.
Trump is on a three-day state visit to China, the first by a sitting U.S. president in nine years.
Trump raised a toast “to the rich and enduring ties between the American and Chinese people,” calling the relationship between the two countries “very special.”
“It's a very special relationship. And I want to thank you again; this has been an amazing period of time. Thank you, President Xi,” Trump said.
He said the discussions earlier in the day with Xi and the Chinese delegation were positive and productive.
“We had extremely positive and productive conversations and meetings today with the Chinese delegation earlier and this evening is another cherished opportunity to discuss among friends some of the things that we discussed today, all good for the United States and for China and it was a great honor to be with you,” Trump said.
The U.S. president said ties between the American and Chinese people go back to the founding of the United States and thanked Xi for the “magnificent welcome.”
Trump said the two countries have “much in common,” pointing to “hard work,” “courage,” and “achievement.”
“The world is a special world with the two of us united and together,” he said.
Xi said China’s advancement and Trump’s goal of making America great again could support each other.
“Achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can totally go hand in hand, help each other succeed, and advance the well-being of the whole world,” Xi said at the banquet.
The comments came on the first full day of Trump’s state visit to China and after the two leaders held talks in Beijing.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday that Trump would say more on Taiwan “in the coming days.”
Taiwan, which China views as part of its territory, was expected to be a key issue in the Beijing talks between Trump and Xi.
