President Donald Trump said Tuesday it was a “good thing” that senior intelligence official Joe Kent resigned after opposing the war with Iran.

Kent stepped down from his role as director of the National Counterterrorism Center, writing in his resignation letter that “I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war with Iran.”

He also said Iran posed “no imminent threat” to the U.S. and accused Israel of pushing the Trump administration toward war.

Trump criticizes former appointee

Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump criticized Kent’s views, calling him “very weak on security.”

“When somebody is working with us that says they didn’t think Iran was a threat, we don’t want those people,” Trump said. “They’re not smart people, or they’re not savvy people.”

Trump, who appointed Kent to the role, said he had “always thought he was a nice guy,” but defended his decision to dismiss his views.

“Iran was a threat,” Trump said. “Every country realized what a threat Iran was.”

He added that Kent’s departure was positive, saying “it’s a good thing that he’s out.”
