U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday criticized Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs following a breakdown in trade negotiations between the two countries.

“Canada wants the benefits of being a state without being one!!!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He also accused Canada of imposing high tariffs on U.S. farmers for years.

“They have also charged our great farmers, for many years, massive amounts of Tariffs. No more!!!” Trump said.

Canada prepares retaliatory tariffs

Carney said Saturday that Canada would introduce new tariffs on U.S. goods beginning Sept. 8, with measures notably targeting the U.S. steel and dairy industries.

Canada also said trade negotiations with Washington had been suspended.

The move followed the implementation Saturday of new 50% U.S. tariffs on about $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.

The affected products account for roughly 5.5% of Canadian exports to the U.S.

Carney said further details of Canada’s tariff measures would be announced in the coming days.
