U.S. President Donald Trump shared what he said was a message from French President Emmanuel Macron on his account on Truth Social.
The screenshot posted by Trump showed Macron saying, “We fully agree on Syria. We can achieve great things on Iran. As for Greenland, I don’t understand what you’re doing.”
In the message, Macron also proposed holding a G7 meeting in Paris on Jan. 22 following the Davos summit.
He said Ukrainians, Danes, Syrians and Russians could also be invited to the meeting.
Macron further invited Trump to have dinner together the same day before the U.S. president’s return to the United States.
Trump’s post came at a time when differences between the two leaders had been reported.
French daily Le Monde reported that Macron was reluctant to accept an invitation from Trump to join a “Peace Council” formed as part of the second phase of the Gaza cease-fire process.
Asked by reporters about the report, Trump said he would impose a 200% customs tariff on French wine and champagne and added that Macron would attend, though participation was not mandatory.
Macron had earlier said on Jan. 15 that French troops sent to take part in joint exercises in Greenland were on their way to the region.
In a separate post, Trump shared screenshots of a message from NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
In the message, Rutte said, “What you achieved in Syria today is incredible,” adding that he would use his media remarks in Davos to highlight Trump’s actions in Syria, Gaza and Ukraine.
Rutte also said he was determined to find a way forward on the issue of Greenland.
