The University of Tokyo announced Monday it is considering accepting Harvard University students who may be affected by the Trump administration's efforts to restrict foreign student enrollment at the Ivy League institution.

The administration moved to revoke Harvard's certification for its Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which would end the university's ability to enroll foreign students and require existing international students to transfer to other institutions or lose their legal immigration status.

A U.S. judge has temporarily blocked the administration's action while the legality of the decision undergoes review.

The Tokyo University's potential assistance builds on an existing program it established in 2022 to support researchers and students displaced by the Russia-Ukraine conflict. That initiative provides access to research laboratories and accommodation at no cost to participants.

According to the university's website, more than 30 students and researchers had enrolled in the Ukraine-related program by the end of March 2024. The program extends beyond financial support to include Japanese language instruction and counseling services.

University officials said they are still working out specific details of how support for Harvard students would be implemented.

The Japanese government has separately urged Washington to minimize any adverse impact on Japanese students currently enrolled at Harvard University.
