The United States and China agreed during bilateral talks in Beijing that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon, the White House said in a statement following the meeting.

The White House said the two sides also agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy.

The statement was released after the bilateral meeting in Beijing and outlined areas of agreement between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Strait of Hormuz, Iran discussed in Beijing

According to the White House, Xi made clear China’s opposition to the militarization of the Strait of Hormuz and any effort to charge a toll for its use.

The statement added that Xi also expressed interest in purchasing more American oil to reduce China’s dependence on the strait in the future.

“The two sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open to support the free flow of energy,” the White House said.

The statement further noted that both countries agreed Iran must not obtain a nuclear weapon.
