The United States military destroyed a suspected drug-smuggling submarine in the Caribbean Sea, killing two people aboard and detaining two others who are being returned to their home countries, President Donald Trump announced Saturday.
"It was my great honor to destroy a very large DRUG-CARRYING SUBMARINE that was navigating towards the United States on a well known narcotrafficking transit route," Trump said on Truth Social. The president said the vessel was loaded with fentanyl and other drugs.
The strike killed two individuals Trump referred to as "terrorists." The two survivors are being sent back to Ecuador and Colombia for detention and prosecution in their respective countries, according to the president's statement.
The submarine was intercepted along a known narcotrafficking transit route used to transport illegal drugs toward U.S. territory. The use of semi-submersible vessels and submarines has become an increasingly common tactic among drug trafficking organizations attempting to evade detection by law enforcement.
