U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States would secure all its objectives regarding Greenland, suggesting Washington could obtain sovereignty over areas hosting American military bases, according to a report.
Speaking to the New York Post, Trump said: “We’ll have everything we want. We have some interesting talks going on.”
Trump said the U.S. could gain sovereignty over land in Greenland by assuming ownership of territories where American military installations are located.
He did not elaborate on how such a step would be carried out.
Trump moderated his language on acquiring the Danish territory earlier this week after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Following the meeting, Trump said he and Rutte discussed a framework deal on Greenland aimed at addressing the U.S. security concerns in the Arctic and countering Russian and Chinese influence in the region.
