Uzbekistan President Mirziyoyev’s decree offers freedom to 335 prisoners and reduces sentences for 91 others in the spirit of Ramadan
In Uzbekistan, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has signed a decree pardoning 426 prisoners in honor of the upcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoyev is an Uzbek politician who has served as President of Uzbekistan and Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Uzbekistan since 14 December 2016
According to the Uzbekistan Presidency Press Office, President Mirziyoyev has granted amnesty to prisoners who have shown remorse for their crimes and are committed to rehabilitation.
Under the decree, 335 convicts will be released, while the sentences of 91 others will be shortened.
The pardoned prisoners include members of illegal organizations, 13 individuals over the age of 60, 50 women, and 11 foreigners.
Last year, President Mirziyoyev pardoned 541 prisoners on the occasion of Ramadan Bayram.
It is a tradition in Uzbekistan for the president to declare amnesty for prisoners who express remorse for their crimes and show a willingness to reform during national and religious holidays.
